Why Luv Kush Captured Lord Rama's Ashwamedh Horse?

Although Luv and Kush were unaware of their mother's true identity, they knew their lineage. They belonged to a warrior clan and understood the duty of warriors to accept challenges from adversaries and protect dharma, their country, and society. When they saw Lord Rama's Ashwamedh horse, they perceived it as a challenge. They knew that wherever the horse traveled, that territory would be considered under Lord Rama's rule. Anyone attempting to stop the horse would have to battle Lord Rama's army.

Luv Kush challenged Lord Rama's Ashwamedh Horse

Luv and Kush accepted the challenge of capturing Lord Rama's Ashwamedh horse. Luv and Kush saw a glimpse of pride in this challenge, yet according to the warrior code(Dharma), they should have accepted the challenge of battle. Although they lacked an army, but just a few days prior, Maharishi Valmiki had bestowed upon them divine weapons that were immensely powerful and divine. With these weapons, they accepted Lord Rama's challenge and captured the horse.

Valmiki had previously informed Luv and Kush about the injustice done to their mother Sita by the people of Ayodhya. This injustice filled them with anger towards Lord Rama for allowing it despite knowing the truth. They wanted to question him about his actions. They hoped that when Lord Rama came to free the horse from their possession during his Ashwamedh yagna, they could ask him those questions directly. This desire led them to capture the horse.
